A unique rowing technique

Agility required among Burmese fishermen of Inle Lake! Standing on their boat, they paddled with one leg and with disconcerting ease. On this smooth and silent lake, only the light sound of the large nets in these shallow waters is heard to catch some fish. Some people sometimes opt for an amazing technique: tapping the surface of the water with the oar to attract fish. If the balancing figures of the fishermen bring incontestably an unusual aspect instead, the surprise is also created by the numerous floating vegetable gardens.

The Intha people, who live on the lake in villages on stilts, maintain water gardens to harvest various varieties of vegetables. To protect this jewel of biodiversity, Inle Lake has been listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015.
